Blog question #1

A couple months ago a band I had formed only a week prior performed our first show. I had written all the songs we played that night so I was especially nervous that people wouldn't like us. When we got there no one had shown up so the show started an hour or so late. The first band performing was cutesy pop punk band from Philadelphia that really got the crowd going, this kind of made us nervous because we were nothing close to pop punk. The second band was also a pop punk band, however, a little more cliche when it comes to pop punk.

Finally when we got on, we started with our quickest song to ease into our set. The first song started out with a very haunting guitar melody smothered in reverb. Cam then started to play his counter guitar melody and the drums kicked in with the bass and vocals. All seemed to go great until I noticed everyone was looking at their cell phones, and watches. Everyone stared blankly at us until I felt like a complete idiot.

Fortunately, after our half hour set was complete, everyone came up to us to congratulate us. We were told our music was very weird (in a good way) and they were excited for recordings. Sometimes it's hard to tell what people are thinking when all you can do is keep playing and not be stressed out about it. It's good to have a positive attitude even when it seems people are being rude. Even if they didn't like us, it's good thing to be able to brush it off and not let yourself be distracted.

  1. It's always fascinating how differently people react at shows, especially from stage. I was always nervouse about performing but then I thought about what I was like in an audience and it made sense that people weren't completely focused the whole time for the music.

  2. When I was in a dancey/synthy pop punk band we knew we were playing well when everyone was dancing insanely. It's very hard going from that to a more mellowed out genre. I still kind of expected everyone to be dancing or something.
