Why is it important to stay in school ? (Response to Question 1 )

When I was in 10Th grade I had to do a presentation on why it's good to stay focused on your education. I wanted to prove to my classmates that school is very important and you should try to go as far with schooling as you can. The reason I chose to write about staying focused in school is because so many people felt that when they stopped going to school they made a big mistake. I thought of the adults that go back to college when they are in their thirties, and by that age they could have been done. Also you have to think of your future and what you want out of life, times are hard now and people without a decent education don't get real far.

So for my research I started to look up the percentage of dropouts that were in the city of Chicago and I remember the dropout rate was 89% of teens dropout after their sophomore year. That percentage is so high and half of those students dropout mainly because they feel school isn't for them or becoming a young parent and also being affiliated with drugs/gangs. From my experience I have had people that came in with me when I was a freshmen and by our sophomore year they were gone, and word gets around school that they dropped out to get their GED. Why would you even avoid a high school experience to get a GED don't you know sometimes a high school diploma will get looked at before a GED. To me I feel when you get a high school diploma you made it all the way through high school with all of the drama that comes with it. But when you get a GED that lets people know that you either had a bumpy road in school or you just dropped out looking for a easy way to get out of school.

In Chicago there are people that you can ask how school makes you feel and some may say it's important and there are some that would be like well school isn't for everybody. School teaches you discipline that's what I wanted to prove because in school you have to listen to the teacher/instructor. If you can't follow simple directions from your teacher what makes you think you can go get a job and don't listen to you boss. Don't be a high school dropout and than 7 yrs later you decide you want to go back to school, just think like where you could have been out of those seven years. But doing this presentation really made my classmates think and even also me. I get tired of school but I know I have to go for the best of me so stay focused and stay in school.

  1. Samuel, you bring up some great points here. I always find it strange to see just how high the rate of dropouts is, as it clearly contributes to the economy and our resourcefulness as a city. I think that education, even with all the money and time involved, is always better for a person because the knowledge takes on an instinctual sense in that person and they then strive to work with what they know. It's always tough to explain but just doing it is often the best way in. -F
