In a social setting or conversation with a person I have never met before the question of musical taste comes up often. Because of this common misconception of the music or culture that I love I am usually reluctant to tell someone what really interests me. I usually say electronic music and leave it at that because of the fact that if I said some of my favorite genres I would get the classic quote I hear from every uninformed person.
“Oh ya, you listen to like that Techno shit?”. Yes, I do; but the main perception that society has on techno is this cheesy over produced garbage that people within a real community hate. Its like someone who makes good, cultured hip hop hating all of the top forty garbage that is thrown on the radio. I am reluctant to tell people what I like because I know they wont understand.
Another misconception is that everyone who listens to techno is on drugs. It is true that the explosion of rave culture and electronic music in the early nineties was fueled by drugs, but most of the producers didn’t even do drugs. Rave culture has died out but the producers still make the music they love. It isn’t about pulsating drum sequences and making people go nuts. Its about the experimentation, the discovery of new sounds, pushing the envelope with what you can do with technology. The crossbreeding of genres to create entirely new music.
A lot of people think techno or house producers are jokes and don’t make real music, but they should be valued once again, as the frontiers of new sounds and synthesis. People fail to see the influence that electronic music and what the rave culture had on modern day music. It could be misinformation but sometimes I get made fun of for what I do. I believe this is pure ignorance.
